Rena Kuwahata

Programme Lead Grid Modernisation and Electrification

Rena Kuwahata is Programme Lead Grid Modernisation and Electrification at Agora Energiewende. With her team, she works on topics related to electricity grid modernisation and flexible electrification globally. Rena Kuwahata has been with Agora Energiewende since 2025.

Prior to joining Agora, Rena Kuwahata worked for the International Energy Agency for three years. As lead and co-author, she was responsible for the agency’s special report on Electricity Grids and Secure Energy Transitions and Integrating Solar and Wind reports, and led power system transformation projects with a focus on digitalisation, AI and regional integration. Before the IEA, Rena Kuwahata worked for nearly two decades across power system operations and planning, technical consulting, policy advisory, and smart grid technology sectors in Europe and Asia Pacific, specialising in renewable energy integration into power systems and markets. Throughout this period, she led project delivery across diverse regulatory and market contexts, developed business strategies including market expansion and fundraising initiatives, and represented her organisations at European and global industry associations. Her work included developing technical reports and policy briefs, and leading capacity building programmes internationally.

Rena Kuwahata studied Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering and Languages at Monash University in Australia, and a Master’s in Management of Energy and Environment Engineering in Madrid, Nantes and Stockholm.
