Transitioning Pakistan’s energy demand

Residential and industrial electrification pathways

About this event

Pakistan’s energy system is at a turning point. Rapid solar expansion, declining domestic gas supply and underutilised power generation capacity create a window of opportunity to shift energy demand away from fossil gas and towards cleaner, more efficient alternatives. To ensure affordability, reliability and long-term sustainability, this transition requires a clear, evidence-based strategy.

To advance this discussion, Agora Energiewende and Agora Industry, together with Policy Research Institute for Equitable Development (PRIED) and LUMS Energy Institute (LEI), invite you to the launch of two complementary studies on electrification pathways in Pakistan’s residential and industrial sectors.

The residential sector study assesses the feasibility of shifting space heating, water heating and cooking from gas to efficient electric and renewable technologies, comparing business-as-usual, partial and full electrification scenarios. It outlines a phased transition pathway that accounts for affordability constraints, winter peak demand pressures and power system readiness. The industrial sector study analyses energy use across key industries by heat requirements and assesses the potential electrification technologies, proposing a transition roadmap sequencing industries over the short, medium and long term.

The event will feature presentations of key findings followed by a Q&A and discussion on implications for energy planning, grid readiness, financing and tariff reform. The event brings together policymakers, industry representatives, researchers and development partners to explore how Pakistan can design a pragmatic and economically viable electrification strategy.
