About our training on Market Design

Agora Think Tanks will host a three-day market design training programme to empower participants to better engage in policy debates around electricity market reforms in Asia. We will explore how well-crafted market designs and regulations are essential for achieving tangible transition goals, such as accelerating the adoption of renewables, ensuring flexible power systems, and maintaining affordable energy for consumers. With this programme, we will provide you with the practical tools to assess when, what and how to implement reforms that facilitate a transition to a renewables-based energy system.
The programme is designed for mid-career staff working on energy transition issues and who have a particular interest in the conditions for cost-effective renewable phase-ins and fossil fuel phaseouts.
Coal and gas power plants continue to dominate electricity generation in power systems across Asia but a shift is underway. System planners and policymakers are ratcheting up the speed at which renewables are deployed, altering the electricity supply mix in pursuit of their governments’ climate and energy security targets. With renewables starting to overtake fossil fuel in capacity additions, the market structures, regulations and policies that have guided power system expansion over the past decades will need to be revisited.
Across Asia, single-buyer systems have long served as the foundation of electricity markets, originally designed for fossil fuel powered systems to efficiently channel private investment and ease government spending. As the energy transition progresses, it is essential to understand the various market designs available and how these operate to support increased renewable energy deployment, maintain grid flexibility, attract investments in new infrastructure, and ensure affordable electricity for electricity consumers.
In this three-day training programme, you will get familiar with the role of electricity market designs in achieving desirable outcomes and discuss the market and policy solutions for cost efficient, decarbonized power systems.
Our upcoming trainings
The 3-day training programme will take place in Bangkok, Thailand. The venue will be announced later.
The training programme will be held on two occasions in October each with 20 participants.
- 14-16 October 2025
- 21-23 October 2025
Applicants can only participate during one of the two time frames listed above.
The call for application for the Fall cohorts is now OPEN.
How to apply
We ask interested participants to prepare their CV and a short (max 500 word) letter of motivation.
In the letter of motivation, we ask that you:
- introduce yourself, your institution, and how your work addresses issues related to power system transformation (for example scaling up renewables, electricity infrastructure, system flexibility, fossil phaseouts, energy affordability)
- describe some of the challenges you face when engaging with stakeholders on these topics
- describe your vision for how the knowledge and skills you expect to gain in this training programme could feed into your institution’s current or future activities and
- indicate your preferred training dates.
The application deadline for the upcoming October 2025 cohorts has ended.

What to expect
On completion of the three-day training programme, you will be able to:
- Understand the fundamentals of (electricity) markets and compare different market designs and their key features.
- Examine the impact of wind and solar power on existing market structures and identify the necessary conditions for their efficient integration.
- Evaluate policy and market strategies for advancing renewable energy deployment across different market and regulatory settings.
- Understand the role of flexibility services in maintaining grid stability and enabling higher shares of renewable energy.
- To assess the strengths and weaknesses of policy solutions voiced in the field.
You can expect a mixture of interactive presentations, individual hands-on exercises, group work and facilitated discussions. Our aim is to create a safe and informal learning environment in which participants learn with and from each other. Sharing best practices from local contexts is actively encouraged.
Who is eligible
The training programme is open to applicants currently employed by or affiliated with a think-tank, non-governmental or civil society organisation advancing the energy transition. The training is designed for mid-career professionals with an interest in scaling up renewables and phasing out fossil-fuelled power.
As we seek to improve participant’s knowledge and skills to expand their institution’s evidence-based energy transition advocacy, we ask that participants:
- are already actively engaged in public and policy debates on renewable energy transitions
- are eager to increase their knowledge and advance developments on power system transformations, renewable energy and fossil power phaseouts
- are considering developing future activities (e.g. policy, advocacy, campaigns) related to fossil fuel phase out or renewable energy
Our training package
Participation in the training programme is free of charge. Participants will receive:
- Access to the 3 days training programme with no fee
- 3-4 nights’ accommodation
- Breakfast and lunches during the training programme
Participants will be expected to cover:
